If you are a college freshman and want to make Dean’s List, don’t leave home without a sofa and your stuffed animal collection.
A new back-to-school survey by IKEA, the home furnishings retailer, finds a strong correlation between a college student’s dorm surroundings and his or her experiences in college.
The IKEA survey randomly queried 600 college students in order to get a better understanding of what really goes on in dorm rooms across America.
It came up with some amazing answers, which coincidental or not, may indicate ways parents can nudge their kids toward success in school.
– Students without sofas in their rooms were 75 percent more likely to call home everyday, compared to students who had sofas in their rooms.
– Students with sofas in their rooms were said to be 21 percent more likely to get a good night’s sleep every night at college, compared to students without sofas in their rooms.
– On the other hand, female students who did have a sofa in their rooms were more likely to study daily, compared to females who didn’t have sofas.
And don’t leave your teddy bear behind. Stuffed animals were found to be an aid toward good grades as well as an insomnia preventive. Male students who said they couldn’t leave home without them were 16 percent more likely to get a good night’s sleep every night. Students who said they couldn’t leave home without their stuffed animals were the most likely to report making Dean’s List at least once in college.
