A fighter jet crashed during a training exercise Monday, about 100 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
The pilot of the A-10 Warthog Thunderbolt II ejected just before the jet crashed into a mountain in Arizona’s Virgin River Gorge, said Mike Estrada, a spokesman for Nellis Air Force Base, where the jet took off.
The pilot was rescued by a Las Vegas police helicopter and returned to Nellis, where he was being treated for minor injuries, authorities said.
The crash occurred in a remote area near Interstate Highway 15. Several motorists on the highway said they witnessed at least three fighter jets flying around the canyon before spotting smoke and flames coming from the crash site.
