The new season in the galleries begins this weekend with a number of openings around town and the interdisciplinary festival in Wicker Park known as Around the Coyote. To observe this occasion, we have resumed a feature of decades past: a preview from now through the end of the calendar year in 50 representative galleries.

Once a list of 50 galleries would have been close to comprehensive; that can no longer be said. But the galleries selected do give an accurate overview of the scene, in terms of locale, media and artistic time periods.

I have also included a half dozen recommendations, ordered by date of opening. They are, of course, made with no knowledge of how the exhibitions will turn out beyond the inherent interest of the theme or the past performance of the artists. These are some of the shows, however, that I am looking forward to:

Alfonso Iannelli — a career-long survey for one of Chicago’s greatest artist-designers. Opens Sept. 14, Architech.

James Lee Byers drawings, sculpture — works by one of the great originals in late 20th Century American art. Sept. 21, Hoffman.

Joel Meyerowitz photographs — works from one of the American masters of color. Oct. 12, Edelman.

Scott Anderson paintings — the first solo show in Chicago by a heretofore perplexing young artist. Oct. 19, Miller.

“The Nature of Ornament: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie,” Oct. 20, Fitzsimmons Decorative Arts.

“Helen Gee and the Limelight” — a look back at one of the pioneering photography galleries in New York. Oct. 26, Daiter.
