Herbert R. Schaeffer, 96, of Prospect Heights, a retired owner of a Des Plaines barbershop, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, in his home. “He enjoyed the independence and conversation that came with running a barbershop,” his grandson Bernie said. “When I went in there as a kid there were always people sitting around and chatting.” Schaeffer’s Barber Shop was a fixture on Lee Street downtown for 53 years. Mr. Schaeffer was the owner and operator from 1932 until he retired in 1985. Before opening the shop, Mr. Schaeffer delivered coal for Des Plaines Lumber and Coal for about four years. “He was the most generous, kind and religious man I ever met,” said his grandson, adding that Mr. Schaeffer didn’t hesitate to help his grandchildren with funding their education or with down payments for their houses. Mr. Schaeffer is also survived by two sons, Marvin and William; seven more grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday in Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, when a service will begin in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 304 W. Palatine Rd., Prospect Heights.
