The U.S. government once made a contract with the American people. It said, you will give us a chunk of your wages all your working life, we’ll keep it for you in a special fund and give some back to you when you retire.

There, that’s pretty neat.

But the government started giving that money to people who never paid into the fund, and now it wants to dip into that fund in a big way. The rumor is that millions of people who have been allowing the government to keep their money for them may have none when their turn comes.

Isn’t this robbery, pure and simple? We know that if we had a portion of our earnings automatically deposited into our investment portfolio or bank account for years, and somewhere down the line the organization said, “Sorry, we had to use your money; there is nothing left for you,” this would be a strong case for litigation. Whether we’d ever be repaid is a moot question; but no one would disagree with us when we screamed, “It is a crime for anyone to take my money and use it as if it were their own!”

The Social Security fund is comprised of our mandatory deposits, but it is still our money. Politicians who even suggest that that money should be used for other purposes are behaving like armed robbers. If they are allowed to follow through with this proposal, we must consider ourselves victims of a mugging on a very large scale. But the bottom line is, to whom can we take our complaint? The government?
