Your Sept. 4 editorial regarding Social Security appropriately focuses attention on the major domestic policy issue for this autumn. Your recommendation for privatization may contribute to a long-term solution. But the form of “privatization” currently being discussed, diverting almost a third of the current employee contributions to private accounts, will do nothing to solve the fundamental problem. The current funding mechanism will not be sufficient to pay the currently projected retirement, disability and survivor benefits. Diverting funds to private accounts will increase rather than reduce that shortfall.
