Mary Catherine Scharff, 77, of Charlotte, passed away on August 31, 2001. A native of Chicago, IL, she was born on Jan. 11, 1924. Mary Catherine was the daughter of the late Catherine Smith and Walter Evard. She was a graduate of St. Xavier College in Chicago, and she taught at St. Colette’s School in Rolling Meadows for 17 years. She is survived by her husband, Louis Scharff; daughters, Mary Lou Kowalczyk of Bay City, MI, Catherine Wiley of Charlotte, NC, Barbara Heinz of St. Louis Park, MN, Margaret Kariya of Apple Valley, MN and sons James Scharff of Green Bay, WI and Thomas Scharff of Ithaca, NY; 16 grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. A Rosary was said at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte on Sept. 2, with a visitation following. A Mass of Christian Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Charlotte, 3420 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28212.
