If one considers that children going to school to obtain an education is analogous to a person going to work to obtain a paycheck, requiring students to buy their own textbooks and supplies is outrageous.
An employer provides an employee, in addition to a building and a place to work, with all the tools necessary to do the job–pencils, paper, computers, file cabinets, heavy equipment, etc. It is not necessary for the employee to spend his own money to buy or rent everything he needs to do the job.
In the case of children, going from 1st through l2th grades, the municipality and/or state must be considered the employer and the students the employees. It is incumbent upon the municipality and/or state to supply the children with all the tools necessary to do the job of learning. Educating children is the responsibility of the public, not just that of the parents of the children.
