Martin F. Berklan, 73, died unexpectedly September 12, 2001 at his home in Waukegan. Born Martin Brkljacic on March 11, 1928 on the South Side of Chicago, Mr. Berklan was a longtime school teacher and principal in the Waukegan Public Schools system before retiring in 1984. He also taught Junior High School in Markham from 1955 to 1957. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen; a daughter, Lynn (David) Surico of Mt. Prospect; a son, Jim (Sandy) of Libertyville; a brother, Michael (Patricia) of Meridian, Idaho; and grandchildren, Nicole and Zachary Surico and Matthew and Nicholas Berklan; he was preceded in death by his parents, Manda and Mate Brkljacic, and a brother, George, all formerly of South Chicago. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Peterson and Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Rd., Waukegan. A funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, 624 Douglas, Waukegan, with interment at Northshore Garden of Memories, 14th St. and Green Bay Rd., North Chicago, following.
