The Kane County Cougars have won their first Midwest League championship.

Kane County led the best-of-five championship series against the South Bend Silver Hawks 1-0 after a 6-1 victory Monday night. Then, because of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks, the league decided Thursday to cancel the rest of the series and declare the Cougars champions.

The Cougars, an affiliate of the Florida Marlins, joined the league in 1991.

Auto racing: Two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen, 32, of Finland plans to retire from Formula One racing at the end of this season, the German Bild newspaper reported. DaimlerChrysler chairman Juergen Hubbert reportedly said the official announcement of Hakkinen’s retirement would be held at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend in Monza, Italy.

– One crewman sustained second- and third-degree burns and another had minor injuries when a flash fire broke out at the race shop in Level Cross, N.C., belonging to Petty Enterprises. The race shop sustained minimal damage.

Tennis: Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia rallied to beat Stefan Koubek of Austria in the second round of the $500,000 President’s Cup 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan . His countryman, top-seeded Marat Safin, ousted Marc Rosset of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

– Top-seeded Monica Seles breezed past Tatiana Panova 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals of the $400,000 Brasil Open in Salvador, Brazil.

Hockey: The Florida Panthers signed goalie Roberto Luongo to a four-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Boxing: England’s Clinton Woods earned a title shot against Roy Jones Jr. by scoring a unanimous decision over Yawe Davis in a final eliminator for the WBC light-heavyweight crown in Sheffield, England.
