Trustees have increased Wheeling’s sales tax to three-quarters of 1 percent from one-half of 1 percent of retail sales.
Village Manager Craig Anderson this week told officials the measure will increase revenue by about $810,000 a year.
It also will stave off, for now, a vehicle registration ordinance, he said.
The village must spend about $40 million over the next several years to improve Village Hall, build a new public works facility and replace streets, sidewalks and water mains, he said.
The home-rule tax applies to all retail sales, excluding food not consumed on premises where sold, such as groceries, and prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
