Herbert Rinehart, 68, of Winfield, a former teacher and guidance counselor at Wheaton Central High School, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield. Born in Chicago, Mr. Rinehart was a graduate of Ball State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He later graduated from Indiana University with a master’s degree in education. A former 35-year resident of Wheaton, Mr. Rinehart was a guidance counselor and taught vocational arts at Wheaton Central High School for three years. Later, he served as the director of career planning and placement at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn before retiring in 1989. “He was very good at matching students with the right job,” said his son William. “He had a lot of contacts at companies, people who had known my dad for years, and who really respected him and his opinions.” Mr. Rinehart enjoyed spending time with his family at their summer home in Minnesota, where he fished and went out on his boat. “If he had one passion, it had to be fishing,” his son said. Mr. Rinehart also taught and coached at schools in Knox, Ind., and Hollywood, Fla. A veteran, he served in the Army in Germany. Other survivors include his wife, Dona; a son, Brad; a daughter, Rebecca Keller; a sister, Joan Robinson; and five grandchildren. A memorial visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. All other services will be private.
