I was appalled by President Bush’s use of Wild West rhetoric, calling for Osama bin Laden “dead or alive.” As a parent of young, school-age children, I have been trying to guide them through this tragedy by assuring them that we are working to bring the people responsible for these horrible acts to justice. I have spoken of American ideals of democracy, liberty, freedom and the rule of law.
I therefore find it irresponsible of our president to use inflammatory rhetoric that evokes vigilantism. His words are repeated on the playgrounds of American schools. I call on him and all our leaders, as they navigate these difficult times, to teach our children well.
