I was deeply offended by your paper’s decision to print an opinion piece by David Martin, who essentially said he feels that there is a presumption that Muslims are terrorists, and that the onus is upon individual Muslims to rebut this presumption (“There is no more wiggle room for Muslims,” Commentary, Sept. 17).
In every religion throughout history, there has been a band of lunatics who have invoked the name of their god to visit destruction upon peoples, even though the tenets of the faith may embrace peace and tolerance.
Hinduism is not stained by the crimes of the ruling Hindu-nationalist party in India. Christ’s message of peace and universal love is not rendered any less valid because of the church’s abysmal historical record of oppression and death. The lessons of the Talmud and Judaism’s sacred text are no less valid despite Israel’s ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians.
Why should adherents of Islam be held to a special standard because of the actions of the Taliban?
