Police have stepped up traffic enforcement near schools across the city in response to complaints of speeding in school zones and vehicles passing stopped school buses.
“We have been and will continue to assign radar cars in school zones, especially during admittance and dismissal times, and we will be writing tickets,” Patrol Sgt. Tom Kearbey said.
Since the start of school, police have issued more than 20 tickets for speeding in school zones.
Police also have continued to post officers on school buses. When those officers spot a vehicle passing a stopped school bus, they call in an officer in a squad car to issue a ticket. Twelve citations have been issued for that offense.
Speeders in school zones face a minimum fine of $150, and drivers who pass stopped school buses face a minimum fine of $150 and a minimum 30 days’ license suspension.
