Kudos to Sam Smith for recognizing that contraction is good for baseball and that the owners didn’t go far enough (Tribune, Nov. 7).
The level of play, with too many mediocre pitchers and .220 hitters, has compromised the game. Eliminating two teams will go a long way toward restoring the “major” in Major League Baseball. The Florida-based teams should be next, followed by two more weak teams to reduce the leagues to 24 ballclubs. MLB could then return to four divisions and eliminate the division series.
I’m dreaming, of course. But if the owners continue contraction, the game, and its fans, will benefit.
