A week of rains has killed 12 people and forced more than 5,000 from their homes in a Brazilian state, officials said Friday.
Espirito Santo Gov. Jose Ignacio Ferreira declared a state of emergency in 44 of the east-central state’s 78 towns.
Forecasts predicting more rain over the weekend have raised fears of further flooding and casualties, civil defense official Nilton Cardoso said by telephone from Vitoria.
