The Boston Red Sox have approached former major-league managers Whitey Herzog and Felipe Alou about serving as bench coaches alongside inexperienced manager Joe Kerrigan.
“Whitey would like to get back in the game,” Kerrigan said Sunday. “He doesn’t want to manage anymore. He feels he’s too old for that.”
Herzog, 70, has been out of uniform since quitting as manager of the Cardinals in midseason of 1990.
Alou, 66, was fired as Montreal Expos manager last May after 10 years.
Money talks–and skis
Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest nations, may have a conspicuous entry in the Salt Lake City Olympics. Sort of a Moldovan version of British ski jumper Eddie the Eagle.
German comic Stefan Raab plans to ski cross-country for the tiny country. He is on the team because he has dual citizenship promised to pay the way for all six Moldovan athletes in the Games.
The German skiing federation recommended he take out an insurance policy to cover broken legs and a hospital stay.
