On Dec. 4, the paper ran LeAnn Spencer’s “U.S. grant targets bilingual teachers in Aurora” in the Trib West section. As much as we appreciate the attention given to the East Aurora School District’s need for qualified bilingual teachers, I disagree with Ms. Spencer’s assertion that East Aurora is “one of the state’s most troubled districts.”

I became superintendent of East Aurora District 131 in July after gaining experience in six other districts in Illinois. In my opinion, East Aurora is not a troubled district but one that faces some challenges. It is true the district’s ISAT scores are not to our satisfaction, but those scores do nor necessarily reflect a troubled school district. I am convinced that the children of District 131 are in excellent hands. We have a very dedicated staff and a community that believes in our staff and students.
