Despite some upbeat economic reports last week, the market was driven lower by disappointing earnings outlooks from several big technology companies.
Quarterly earnings reports and forecasts also affected results for several major Chicago companies.
Sears Roebuck, based in Hoffman Estates, helped boost stock prices Thursday with fourth-quarter profits at the high end of analyst estimates. For the week, Sears gained $1.28, or 2.5 percent, to $52.63.
On the downside, Packaging Corp. of America, Lake Forest, sank $2.24, or 11.7 percent, after the company posted a 28 percent decline in fiscal third-quarter net income, citing lower prices.
UAL, Elk Grove Township, rose $1.67, or 11.6 percent, for the week, to $16, amid budding optimism for a recovery in the airline industry.
