In the aftermath of Sept. 11, I thought we had learned the meaning of the word inhumane. In the Jan. 31 article entitled, “Jerusalem bomber identified,” Stephen Franklin describes a 28-year-old woman named Wafa Idris as a woman “who loved to joke, to dress up, to play with neighborhood children….” A picture of her mother accompanies the article. The mother is quoted as saying, “I wish every girl could do what my daughter has done….”
The sad fact is that Idris was a declared terrorist who detonated a bomb that killed an 81 year-old-man and wounded 150 others in Jerusalem. Franklin is guilty of humanizing the inhumane. There is also no place in journalism for the justification of the actions of a terrorist that wreak havoc on humanity.
