The Tribune ran a column titled “Official Catholicism: The Enron of religious institutions” (Commentary, Feb. 3) from Eugene Cullen Kennedy.
The Enron scandal has given people a new easy-to-use, all-purpose bad name for their opponents. Whatever the cause, making your opponent look “Enron-like” sure makes the point.
It doesn’t take much to figure out that this is a cheap way to attract readers’ attention. Whatever point Kennedy was trying to make in his article is completely lost in his meaningless comparisons to Enron. If he is able to use more substance and poise, and less Enron irony, Kennedy will have a much better chance in helping the Catholic Church to heal its wounds.
