On Jan. 27, I noticed that your literary editor, Elizabeth Taylor, described my new book, “The Envy of the World,” as a treatise on the mistreatment of black men. My book is not primarily about “the mistreatment of black men.”
It is a celebration of black male success, an analysis of black men–including their mistreatment and their mistreatment of others–in American culture, a look at male-female relationships, a guide to success as a black man, and a reflection on how black men often undermine themselves.
I realize the Tribune article was not about my book, but to describe it as the story did is very misleading. It seriously mischaracterizes the book and does a disservice to those with an interest in the subject.
