William A. Mayville, 82, of Des Plaines, a retired diesel mechanic, made a career of his favorite hobby, family members said. “He loved fooling around with cars and that’s what he did for most of his life,” said his wife, Marjorie. Mr. Mayville died Saturday, Feb. 9, in Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines. He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and raised in Chicago, where he graduated from Tilden High School. During World War II, Mr. Mayville was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Forces, stationed in the South Pacific. He married in 1948 and moved to Des Plaines in 1954. In the early 1950s he was superintendent of the United Motor Coach bus line in Des Plaines. He spent several years working as a mechanic for Coca-Cola Co. in Skokie. Before his retirement in 1980, Mr. Mayville worked at the Chrysler Plymouth dealership in Schaumburg. Mr. Mayville was a member of Machinist’s Union Local 701 and was the first president of the union’s retiree club when it formed in the early 1980s. “Even after he retired, he still worked on cars,” his wife said. Other survivors include a daughter, Marsha Jancsovics, and a grandson. Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a service in G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines.
