Your article “Reporter off radio after Taliban story” (News, Feb. 6) contains several misstatements of fact, the most egregious of which is contained in the story’s headline. Spozhmai Maiwandi is not off the air at the Voice of America as the article asserts, nor has she ever been taken off the air.

She continues to prepare and broadcast news and information about Afghanistan in Pashtu.

Moreover, she has not been “sent to Siberia” as the article reports, but rather has been given expanded responsibilities and was recently sent to Tokyo to cover the Conference for Reconstruction Assistance to Afghanistan. Her temporary reassignment along with several other language service directors had nothing to do with a Taliban story but was part of a general reorganization of Afghanistan-related language services to meet the exigencies of the war against terrorism.
