Leonard Pitts’ account of the grocery store that insulted its black customers by putting fried chicken on sale during Black History Month was a timely reminder of how we must be ever-vigilant against even accidental incidents of racism and respond to them with the full force of our indignation (“Living in a world of dangerous assumptions,” Commentary, Feb. 12).
Zero tolerance is hardly strong enough in such cases.
And so it’s in that spirit that I must call for the resignation of John Kass, who in the very same issue of the Tribune bitterly slanders the Polish people by suggesting that they consume a lot of paczki before Lent.
Clearly the notion of ethnic cuisine is the next barrier we must overcome to reach our goal of a race-blind and palate-neutral society.
