Chicago police were looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck a man at 73rd Street and Ashland Avenue Friday morning, leaving him in critical condition with both legs broken.
Someone flagged down a police officer after finding Derrick Bell, 30, of the 7200 block of South Wood Street, lying in the street about 1:10 a.m., police spokesman Thomas Donegan said.
He said police don’t have a description of the vehicle that hit Bell, who was taken to Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Police also are looking for the driver of a blue two-door Oldsmobile or Chevrolet that struck and killed Helen Perkins, 48, in a hit-and-run Thursday as she crossed the street in the 200 block of East Garfield Boulevard.
Police said witnesses were unable to provide a license plate number of the vehicle that struck Perkins, of the 7200 block of South Rhodes Avenue, at 6:19 p.m. Thursday.
Perkins lived alone and didn’t have any children, said a great niece, Stephanie Johnson, 16.
Johnson described Perkins as a funny, energetic woman who collected antiques and enjoyed surprising her nieces with flowers or trinkets she had collected.
“She was real sweet,” Johnson said. “When we saw her, she always had something to give us.”
