Irene “Honey” Thon, 82, “The Lady in Red”, as she was known in Streeterville, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 in Northwestern Hospital. Dressed in her beautiful red cape and white hair, she moved thru the neighborhood, stopping to visit with everyone, patiently listening to their stories and giving just the right support to each. “Honey” grew up on the northwest side of Chicago, a city she adored, the youngest of eight children. As a young woman, she became the matriarch in her family, caring for her beloved mother, Anna Thon, her sister’s children and adopted mother to Georgianne. She worked in the hotel business for years, as the right hand to Joseph Stein, owner of the Alexandria Hotel. Ms. Thon then became the legal assistant to John Redmond and worked for Mr. Redmond until health issues forced her to retire in 1991. She read voraciously, loved the arts, classical music, especially the Opera and was known in the neighborhood for the musical salons she gave at her home. As a hostess, her talent was bringing people of various backgrounds together for these events, and an invitation was considered very special. Besides her daughter, she is survived by a nephew and his wife, Tim and Lydia Korzen; and many, many friends. A Memorial Service is being planned for April.
