Since the Tribune’s March 4 endorsement of Bob Coleman for attorney general, his opponent, Joe Birkett, has launched a negative and untruthful television ad campaign that demonstrates that Birkett is clearly unfit to be the next chief law officer of the State of Illinois.

In his television ads, Birkett claims that Coleman wants to be attorney general but never prosecuted a single criminal case. This statement is false and Birkett knows it is false.

In truth and fact, Coleman and I, as assistant attorneys general, while serving in the office of former Atty. Gen. Bill Scott, prosecuted an unprecedented criminal indictment against 11 Chicago-area coal retailers for price fixing in violation of the Illinois Antitrust Act.

Illinois citizens deserve an attorney general who plays by the rules and tells the truth. Birkett does not meet this standard. Coleman does.
