I cannot begin to describe my dismay at the loss by Paul Vallas in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. I had decided that if he won, I would get as involved as possible with trying to get him elected in November. I can’t remember the last time I felt that excited about a political candidate. It was probably when I cast my first-ever vote, for Jimmy Carter in 1976. It’s been that long.
It’s a sad state of affairs when there’s no excitement to casting a vote. Of course it’s no wonder that millions display that distinct lack of joy by avoiding the polls altogether, given the choices they’re invariably offered.
Vallas was different. He is clearly a man of integrity, a quality worth some enthusiasm in politics these days due to its sheer scarcity. I mourn with John Kass and others the defeat of Vallas, who is clearly not only what Illinois needs but what our whole country needs: someone of honesty, dedication, determination and, above all, honor.
Thank you, Vallas, for providing even a small beacon of hope for change.
