Say what you will about former President Bill Clinton, he did make heroic efforts to secure a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians. How about the Bush administration appointing Clinton as special envoy to help secure a cease-fire and then work on a permanent settlement in the Mideast?
This shades-of-Richard-Nixon-opening-relations-with-China approach would be a serious symbol of U.S. commitment to the effort and offer the region a knowledgeable, savvy and experienced negotiator/facilitator. Would President Bush be big enough to offer it? Would Clinton be big enough to accept? Would the voting public be big enough to give it a chance?
