Marjorie E. McDermand, 95, of Lisle, a retired Naperville teacher, died Monday, April 22, of heart failure in Walnut Manor Nursing Center in Walnut, Ill. Born in Tiskilwa, Ill., Ms. McDermand had been a resident of Naperville since 1927. She earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching at Pestalozzi Froebel Teachers College in Chicago and continued her education at the National College of Education in Chicago, Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She taught in Naperville schools from 1927 to 1964. In 1970, a plaque was placed in the Prairie School in Naperville in her honor for her many years of service. “This was a high point in her career,” said her niece, Sue Jane Peterson. “She had committed her whole life to the education of children and being recognized this way meant the world to her. Although she never married or had children, she always considered her students her own children,” Peterson said. Ms. McDermand was also a member of the National, State of Illinois, and DuPage County Retired Teachers Associations. She was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville since 1942, where she served as superintendent of the primary education department for 17 years. Other survivors include nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 10 a.m., until the time of services at 11 a.m. Monday, at Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Gartner Rd., Naperville.
