Your April 28 editorial “As timid as church mice” was quite off the mark time-wise. As with all scandal, public or private, shock at first causes a silence, then a defense and finally a regrouping of those involved with a plan for a solution and an ease of the pain. Your editors hardly allowed that appropriate span of time before commenting in the negative regarding the cardinals.
I doubt if a personal tragedy among your friends or co-workers would have demanded an end to the sorrow as abruptly as your words placed on the Catholic cardinals.
