I’m happy for Mike Cameron that he got his day in the sun (Tribune, May 3). Frankly, though, I don’t care if he hits 10 homers in one game. I would still make the Paul Konerko trade and I certainly would rather have Kenny Lofton as my center fielder.
I think the bigger problem is the pitching. The way Jon Rauch and Jim Parque pitched against the Mariners on Thursday night, James Baldwin could have hit four homers. Last year, when David Wells suggested he was willing to take an incentive-laden contract to come back, I thought the White Sox were making a big mistake by not taking a chance. I still think it was a mistake. It didn’t matter that Wells said some outrageous stuff, because he had the guts to go out and challenge the other team. I believe he is one of the reasons for Mark Buehrle developing into an ace.
If Wells were here, he would have made a great No. 3 starter, and we wouldn’t be talking about Cameron, or the Mariners, or the A’s taking batting practice off the Sox’s pitchers.
