In calling for yet another amnesty for illegal immigrants, the Tribune once again demonstrates ignorance of the dynamics of illegal immigration. The present flood of illegals is primarily the result of the last amnesty.

Coupled with the Immigration and Naturalization Service decision not to enforce the law against employers of illegals, the amnesty signaled that the U.S. is not serious about protecting its borders.

If the U.S. really wants to stop the invasion of illegals, the U.S. must take key steps:

– Enact large fines against employers who hire illegals.

– Increase interior enforcement by enlisting the cooperation of state and local police.

– Significantly reduce legal immigration to levels recommended by the Jordan Commission (about 500,000 annually). This step is necessary because legal immigrants often provide the means for illegals to enter the country. Spain and other European nations found that illegal immigration dropped significantly after legal immigration was reduced.

With millions of Americans looking for jobs paying a livable wage, it is absurd to argue that America needs illegal immigrants. A halt to illegal immigration would drive wage rates for unskilled labor up to the level that Americans would take these jobs. That’s how a market economy is supposed to work.

Instead illegal immigration effectively subsidizes employers who benefit from exploiting cheap imported labor.

At the same time, taxpayers must pay for the education and services for immigrants and their children because, even when illegals pay taxes, it is not enough to cover the costs to society.

How about a little fairness for Americans?
