The former Occoneechee Speedway, an overgrown former NASCAR dirt track in Hillsborough, N.C., has found its way to the National Register of Historic Places.

NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. opened the track in 1948 with several partners. When the last race took place in 1968, the track was known as the Orange Speedway.

Among the drivers who raced there were Lee and Richard Petty, Ralph Earnhardt, Junior Johnson, Curtis Turner and Fireball Roberts.

Mind your minds

Psychic Uri Geller has joined the Exeter, England, soccer team as co-chairman.

Geller, best known for his spoon-bending powers, expects to “motivate the fans into buying more season tickets.”

“I will be meeting the fans, inspiring them, telling them how to support the club with their mind, body and spirit,” Geller said. “I will go into the dressing room to motivate the players.”

Mind over matter

Hawaiian grand champion Musashimaru is looking for back-to-back titles for the first time since 1999 in the 15-day summer grand sumo tournament that starts Sunday in Tokyo.

Musashimaru, a winner of 10 titles, is coming off a victory in the spring tournament, where he was 13-2. He also should benefit from the absence of several top wrestlers at the meet.
