John Backus was born on December 8, 1924 in Chicago, IL and died at the age of 77 on May 16, 2002 in Phoenix, AZ. He moved to Arizona in 1998 from Chicago where he was employed by Amoco Research for 33 years and retired in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Backus; daughters, Holly Korab of Champaign, IL, Karla Shultz of Winter Park, FL and Laura Backus of Chicago, IL; son, John Backus of Phoenix, AZ; and nine grandchildren. Visitation is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and services are being held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002 at the Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church, 15820 W. Clearview Blvd., Sunrise, AZ 85374. Memorials are to be sent to the church.
