Kerry Wood lashed out at the disgraceful play of the Cubs in a tirade usually reserved for the manager of the team (Tribune, May 14). Where was Don Baylor? He was probably studying the percentages to determine the best time to lash out at his team. What else can you expect from a guy who has his No. 2 hitter sacrifice in the third inning of a game, leaving first base open for the opposing team to walk Sammy Sosa?
Baylor might sink his own ship by saying his team has no heart because many players play with fire for an inspirational manager. Other than Wood’s speech, the Cubs aren’t showing much fire and Baylor isn’t providing much inspiration.
Baylor only dreams that he could be a Tony La Russa, that he could get other teams to believe in his mind games or that he could manage with spontaneity as well as tactical skill. The Cubs need a manager like La Russa, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre or Lou Piniella . Perhaps Felipe Alou fits the bill, but Baylor certainly isn’t the solution.
