E. James “Jim” Hayes Sr., of Lansing, MI, born July 7, 1923 in Chicago, IL, died May 16, 2002 at the age of 78. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edward A. and Helen F. Hayes; sister Mary Lynn Cody and brothers Howard W. and Raymond L. Hayes. He graduated from Leo High School, Chicago, served in the Army Air Force for 39 months during World War II (Philippine Islands and Japan), graduated from Michigan State University in 1948 (B.A. School of Journalism). Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Shirlee “Lee” Nielson Hayes; daughter Kristine (Kiernan) Manion and sons Edward (Connie), Mark (Rebecca), Jon (Joanne), Gregg (Joan) and Jeffrey (Kelly); and 14 grandchildren. Private family services have been held. A gathering of family and friends for a memorial reception will take place on Sunday, May 26, 1 p.m., at the Hawk Hollow Golf Course, Lakeview Room, 15101 Chandler Rd., Bath, MI.
