Which would you rather have your child know–how to read, interpret and think critically about issues presented to them, or how to memorize some names and dates?
If you want names and dates, continue to rely on standardized testing.
The sampling of questions reproduced in the May 15 Tempo do not test whether or not a student knows history; they measures whether a student knows names and dates. Teaching names and dates neither teaches children history nor does it prepare them for the real world.
Standardized testing forces teachers to teach to the test, making history even more boring and pointless in the eyes of today’s youth. Testing has its place, but are we using it appropriately?
