Challenges: New coach Bill Callahan from Chicago’s South Side succeeds Jon Gruden and tries to get one more season from veterans QB Rich Gannon and WRs Jerry Rice and Tim Brown on offense while infusing new faces to shore up sagging defense.

Key newcomers: OT Willie Roaf (Saints), PK Morten Andersen (Giants), WR Johnnie Morton (Lions), WR Curtis Jackson (Patriots).
Top rookies: DT Ryan Sims, DT Eddie Freeman.
Challenges: Better play from QB Trent Green to complement all-purpose star Priest Holmes. Morton will help. Coach Dick Vermeil hopes rookies can improve the 23rd-ranked defense.
San Diego Chargers

Key newcomers: DT Jason Fisk (Titans), C Cory Raymer (Redskins), TE Stephen Alexander (Redskins), LB Donnie Edwards (Chiefs).
