Fire officials in far southwest suburban Manhattan on Friday were trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a grain elevator that has long been a landmark in the community.
The old, wooden, 80-foot-high structure, on Illinois Highway 52 near the downtown, burned down early Friday.
Manhattan Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Boyle said firefighters arrived on the scene about 3 a.m. but by then the elevator was engulfed in flames.
