Elgin Community College will hold two back-to-back courses that will give students a lesson in municipal zoning and planning.
The courses are intended for municipal officials but are valuable for developers or others with a stake in community planning issues, said Joan Arnal, a coordinator at the college’s Center for Lifelong Learning.
The first course, “Zoning: Theory and Practice,” will cover the zoning process, including annexation agreements, inappropriate zoning, administration and enforcement.
“Planning: Basic Concepts” will teach basic planning theory and elements of planning, including transportation, utilities, land use plans and economic development.
Robert Nelis, a Chicago-area planning consultant who has taught the course for 19 years, will teach both classes.
The college also has a one-day course on how to buy foreclosed property.
Instructor Julie Dahl, a real estate broker, will explain the types of property, the bidding process and cash incentives.
“Zoning” will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by “Planning” from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $89 for each class or $149 for both.
“Purchasing Foreclosed Property” will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29. The cost is $29.
Classes will be held at the college, 1700 Spartan Drive.
Registration is open until the day of class. Call 847-622-3036 or visit www.elgin.edu.
