I enjoyed Mike Dorning’s Oct. 14 profile of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (“Durbin deftly mixes populism and pork; 1st-term senator bridges factions”), a portion of which was written during his recent trip to Quincy, Ill.
I would, however, like to point out that the new 18th Street Bridge is much more than a “pork” project. It is the culmination of an eight-year, local-state-federal effort to link the north side of Quincy and its growing industrial parks to a main thoroughfare and to provide much needed life safety and transportation access. I am happy to report that the bridge is now open to traffic and residents of the Quincy North Side can now enjoy improved access to the city and its services, thanks to Durbin.
We in Quincy don’t consider that pork or politics, just good leadership.
