Mark R. Singer, 95, of Chicago, a longtime women’s basketball coach for Chicago Public Schools, died of heart failure Monday, Oct. 28, in St. Joseph Hospital. Mr. Singer played basketball at Lane Tech High School and DePaul University before playing semi-professionally for several teams. In the 1930s, he began coaching some of the earliest girls teams in Chicago-area leagues, leading one team to a national championship in 1933, said his niece Lenora Singer Schur. At Wells High School in 1937, Mr. Singer coached his squad to a city championship and later was appointed athletic director at Wells. Mr. Singer became athletic director and then principal at Logan Continuation High School, a school designed for troubled youths. He spent much of his career at Logan, retiring in 1973. During his years as a high school coach, Mr. Singer compiled a 132-26 record. From the late-1960s, Mr. Singer was a resident of Wood Dale, where he served as fire commissioner, president of his homeowners association and member of the village’s Zoning Board. He is survived by his son, Ralph; his daughter, Diane Maas; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth. Services will be scheduled at a later date.
