A nail bomb found Tuesday near two grammar schools and dismantled by bomb technicians was put there by a man who mistook the item for debris, police said Thursday.
Pat Camden, deputy director of police news affairs, said the man found a small cardboard box on the front seat of his car parked in the 1400 block of North Wieland Street Tuesday morning. He thought it was construction debris and placed the box on a curb, Camden said.
About 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Streets and Sanitation workers noticed the box containing nails and called 911, police said. Bomb technicians dismantled the box, which had an explosive substance connected to a battery inside, police said.
