The prosecution rested its shoplifting case against Winona Ryder after the defense aggressively attacked a key witness.
Attorney Mark Geragos presented documents showing that security officer Colleen Rainey had set up a “writing services” company with her struggling screenwriter boyfriend just two weeks after charges were formally filed against Ryder. Rainey denied she had sold the story.
Geragos also accused Rainey of rifling through Ryder’s Filofax for movie-star phone numbers.
“Didn’t you say ‘That’s Bono’s number, that’s so and so’s number,” Geragos asked. “Didn’t you say, ‘Oh my God, I love Keanu Reeves,’ and take his number?”
“No,” Rainey replied.
Geragos was reprimanded by Judge Elden Fox, who threatened to hold him in contempt.
Rainey acknowledged that she peered through the slats in the dressing room door and saw Ryder tending to a bleeding finger and using scissors to remove sensor tags.
The defense opens its case Friday, but Geragos would not say whether Ryder would take the witness stand.
