I was disappointed that a columnist of Bob Verdi’s stature would criticize Dick Jauron for his understandably frustrated response to a radio talk-show caller who suggested Jauron was a “coward” (Tribune, Oct. 27).

Jauron is as patient and thoughtful a football coach as I have ever seen, and if he isn’t entitled to vent his feelings about a dim-witted caller, I don’t know who is.

Imagine, if you will, what Mike Ditka’s response to this caller might have been.

Of course, the media would have given Ditka a pass on the grounds that it’s just his personality showing–an unfortunate double standard.

I can understand how these sports talk-show hosts would make a big deal of Jauron’s response, but I wouldn’t have expected Verdi to stoop to this level.

Jauron is a stand-up guy who gave Chicago a 13-3 football team with average talent, and he doesn’t deserve criticism for a rare loss of patience.
