For Q Challenge 2, we were hungry for something cerebral. A little brain food, if you will, after running that silly deer-head photo the week before. So we printed a New York Times description of “Red Dragon’s” Hannibal Lecter as “the best-known anthropophagite since Grendel stalked the world of Beowulf.” Then we invited readers to submit their own equally erudite description of a fictional character.
Talk about not getting the concept. It went right over your dear heads. Or, more likely, you thought it was a dumb idea, which would explain why most entrants–we got, oh, eight–simply wrote a Hannibal Lecter photo caption.
We get the picture. For our next Q Challenge, we’ll aim for fun, not highfalutin. But first, here are our three Challenge 2 winners:
First place (Winner of a copy of “What Flavor Is Your Personality? Discover Who You Are by Looking at What You Eat”):
“Buffy the vampire slayer: Sunnydale’s lithe sentinel vanquishes disparate bestiaries of atavistic malformations with a rapier wit and consummate martial prowess.”
–Mark Trueblood, Geneva
Second place (A copy of “Eat Healthy, Feel Great”):
“Jimmy Neutron is so smart, his report card had more A’s on it than Hester Prynne after a week of bacchanalia at Caligula’s house.”
–Sharon Dynek
Third place (A copy of “Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating”):
“Dr. Lecter will always be my creepy connoisseur of gustatory gore.”
–Euell Gophar
Watch for the winners of Q Challenge 3 next week.
