Letter writer Bruce Handler wrote, regarding the death penalty, that “our No. 1 concern has to be for the victims and their loved ones” (“Remember victims,” Voice of the people, Oct. 28). He is incorrect. Our No. 1 concern must be justice. It is the task of the state to punish criminals, not exact blind revenge on behalf of victims.
He also states that he will have no trouble sleeping at night if one in a thousand people executed should not have been. I wonder if he would be so cavalier if he or someone he loved were the innocent one put to death.
Apparently he finds it easy to ignore the ultimate injustice when it is visited upon strangers.
